I drove over to Stickshifter enterprises yesterday after work to harass him until he let me borrow his digital 4 corner scales yet again. I gotta find a set of these for myself one day, SO useful. The curiosity was killing me about how heavy the 74 is compared to the 70 2 seater. Here is the 70 AMX stats with 1/3 tank of fuel, minus driver. Screenshot_20221130-183158_Photos by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr And here is the 74 Javelin with 1/4 tank fuel, minus driver. I really did not expect it to be this light, though it is now without a heater box, with Wilwood front brakes, and minus a bunch of undercoating. 20221130_183528 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr It is of course a 360 with a stock aluminum bell housing, so a 401 with steel bell will change things. It even has better front/rear weight distribution than the short 2 seater, which I also did not expect. This should make a better chassis than I thought for "stock appearing" shenanigans. 20221130_183749 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr

At the local feed mill mine weighed 3240 with 15x6 Mopar Road Wheels.
I always thought this was the best chassis AMC ever built. aerodynamic, balanced and don't have to tub for HUGE tires.

With the extra wheel base, roll up rear window regulators, rear seat, and huge crash beams in the doors in 1974, I am pleasantly surprised.

Years ago a local big money Fast Guy was checking my Car out, he was amazed. He loved all the room between the Rad Support and Grill for a couple of Wuhan Whistlers.

My Car has a ton of undercoat on it too. all under the hood as well. So there's weight to be lost there if I scraped it all off like you did.

People think AMX's are light are mistaken. I too am surprised how light that Javy is!

I've been telling people the weight of mine for 20 years. I guess they all thought I was lying.

I just remember my old red 71 was 3580 ish with me in it. But, 12 point roll cage, stock front brakes, Ford 9" with iron center section, etc.

People think Monza's are light. A stock V8 hatchback with AC is a 3350 Car. In the Early day with the AIR Pumps. A Buddy had a 78 without air, it was 3275. He had an 84 Berlinetta at the same time. Full options car, it was the same weight as my Jav. Those Turd Gens were light. but these weights were at Truck scales mostly. I'm sure Sticks little scales are more accurate.

if you think about it, the front makes sense. Big body has the 'glass hood and a bumper that probably weighs a 1/4 of the '70 bumper. The fenders weigh a little more, but it's just sheet metal. Rear is surprising, I believe from a visual stand point. The bulbous ass of the '71-4 makes you think it would be lots heavier, but again mostly sheet metal and 12 more inches..

I would bet money that the fiberglass hood actually weighs more than the stock steel hood.

I'm sure it's close, but was thinking about the 'glass hood versus a '70 ram air hood. That '70 hood molding has to weigh 3 times the '74 molding!

In preparation for the new engine, I cut off the kinked up muffler shop exhaust that came on the Javelin when I bought it. It actually fit pretty well, and was 2 1/4" from the manifolds to the mufflers, then 2" tailpipes. 20230701_190535 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr I built a new 2.5" all stainless exhaust using Mustang 5.0 LX tailpipes, like I put on the 70 AMX. The eclassics.com gas tank must be a bit wider than stock, and the left side pipe took some cutting and splicing to get around the tank corner. 20230624_171412 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr I was using Dynomax Ultra Flow mufflers on the 70 AMX, until the internal pipe rusted out and all the fiberglass packing puked out of the tailpipes. I switched to Jones Engineering stainless mufflers from Summit, which look nicer and cost half as much. So, I used them again on this car. There is a modified Pipes X pipe kit, a bung for f/a O2 sensor, and V band clamps in front of the mufflers to allow the front half of the exhaust to easily drop out for transmission changes. I pieced together the manifold down pipes. I made them nice and wide around the transmission, so access will be easier to the clutch through the bellhousing door that Stickshifter made for me. There is a new driveshaft loop tucked up in there too. I'm pretty happy with how well everything fits, and still has great ground clearance. 20230701_184918 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20230701_184757 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20230701_184946 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20230701_185118 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr Resized_20230626_172128(1) by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr
