1969 AMX Progress: Almost done! First of all for some reason the car will not shut off you have to Stall it off– Fixed. Needed a MSD Tach-Adaptor Motor: 1. Oil leak 2. Water leaking– Fixed. Complete engine rebuild Transmission:. – Inspected and everything looks OK. – Replaced tail shaft bushing and re-sealed side cover. – Replaced tail shaft bushing and seal but output shaft is pitted and needs reworked or, replaced. 3.Missing the speedo gear in tail shaft so now I have no speedometer– Replaced gear in transmission with a used one and replaced the gear on the cable with a new one. Brakes: 1. They seem to be ok but they are very touchy and sensitive– Added proportioning valve to rear brakes. Suspension: wheel rubs the front lower corner of the fender.– Tires may be too big in front. 2. Do you have a guy that does alignment? – Replaced Pinion arm, Aligned front end. 4. Also I feel like I have vibration when getting up to highway type speeds. - It could have been a result of a wore out tail shaft bushing or, those stupid urethane motor mounts. To Do: Drive it a few miles and check front end alignment. 1. Bleed air from Power Steering or, rebuild pump. 2. Install Weather Eye heater and fan control levers. 3. Install stripes. 4. Return Tachometer for calibration.
To Watch: Spring clips on clutch lever and clutch arm are not correct and not too secure. Rear output shaft yoke is pitted. Leaks a small amount of transmission oil. Shifter is as good as it gets for an old stocker. Once it gets loose again, I would upgrade to a Hurst.

I always wanted to try to make a rear reflector out of a chunk of red plexiglas so, I tried it. This is the panel between the tail lights. I had to cut a "V" shape to make it fit right but it seemed to work ok. To hold it in place, I cut small chunks of plexiglas and glued it to the back side where the original tabs were.

Shit, I forgot about that.. I suppose I should see what I can do with it. Maybe you can hide it with the stripes.

Bill Kotula, the owner of the #1 Breedlove car, asked me to do some work to the car over the winter. It is quite a honor and a privilege to me. Of course, I enlisted javtwotone to help out with the electrical stuff. Believe it or not, both the #1 and #2 Breedlove cars are in the same County in Michigan. I know the owner of the #2 car as well and will be contacting him soon to pump him for information. The #1 car has been modified for the Bonneville run and then again for drag racing. Bill wants to undo the drag racing stuff to get it back to the original set-up. Or, as close as we reasonably can. IMG_2497 by Rick Jones, on Flickr Remove the stock gas tank. The trunk floor has a removable panel. Bill wants to put a fuel cell back in there. IMG_2925 by Rick Jones, on Flickr I finally got that giant 9" and the 9 leaf spring pack out of there. IMG_2920 by Rick Jones, on Flickr

What sizes are the tires and rims? Thats the car with the big ass wheelwells in the rear. Can you get some shots of the mods done to them? You can toss in as many detail shots of any mods at all on that machine. Im sure theres plenty of interest in it from others. No secret i am very interested in that car. Wow! That rear axle looks like one from a 57-59 fairlane. I got one in my hornet. Also a popular axle to swap into an early mustang or falcoon.

The tires are Good Year Blue Streak Specials. 600-15 front, 700-15 rear. Both on 15x7 American Racing Wheels. The big ass wheelwells were cut out for the big ass salt flat tires. Rough measurement of the 9" is 61" drum to drum. It has all kinds of brackets on it and a little channel iron to boot. I will take some pictures of it because he wants to sell it anyways. I think that it has a 4.56 gear but, I will check that as well.
Here is the famous video.
I first saw the video in about 1978 and was blown away. Since then I have seen it at least 10 times and hated the dubbed in sound here and there. I never really noticed this stuff until Bill pointed it out to me. The move was made after they set all of the records but I think that they used some original footage. There was 2 cars, a 290 car and a 390 car. The 290 car was #2 and the 390 car was #1. From front to back the #2 car was blue, white, and red. The #1 car was red, white, and blue. They swapped numbers back and forth to make the movie. Watch closely. Even in the first minute while they unload the car from the trailer in one shot they show a red hood and the very next shot they show a blue front fender. That's Hollywood for you.

Is the rear end original breedlove stuff? I thought it may be, its got those funny landing skids welded to it. Like maybe if you blew out a rear tire they would hit the salt and hold up the car while it dragged to a stop? I figure thats an important part of the history of the car if my guesses are true. But if its just some mod somebody did i guess i would loose it too. 61 inches is too wide for a fairlanre, Maybe a galaxie rear. I also figure it needed something more than an amc 20 to handle a blown 390. I have seen the vid many times and yes the production is full of many cheesy moments, but it is so period appropriate. Its an awesome relic as is the car. I cant recall exactly when i first saw that vid, as i recall it was always fuzzy but fun. Same with the javelin breed video. They really cemented my feet into amc. Everyone gave me such shit when i got a javelin, it kinda sucked with hubcaps and the weird stance, but those race amc’s had it all together. I had a teacher in hi school who had a bbg “ indy 500 edition” 69 amx. It had fat tires on crager ss’s. It was a nuclear bomb in my head.

Those "landing skids" are actually brackets for wheelie bars with flexible flat spring plate bottom bars. Not sure how long that style has been in production, but probably era correct from it's drag days. www.summitracing.com/parts/cee-2016A 61" housing like that sounds like 1971 ish Cougar/ Mustang to me. That's what I had in my old 71 Javelin.

Yep, Bill says that the 9" was installed for drag racing after they ran on the salt flats. He still has the wheelie bars. IMG_2936 by Rick Jones, on Flickr IMG_2934 by Rick Jones, on Flickr

That housing is pretty early, it has the rounded rear cover. 9” housings made from the early 60’s up had the rear cover were flatter with an odd contour to clear the ring gear and a fill plug on it. I remember a lot of old drag cars had those leaf spring type wheelie bars. So that rear end is probably not a breedlove mod?

It is not a Breedlove mod. Joe Terrill installed the 9" after he bought the car from Randall. I just read that in a magazine article from 1986.
