The kaplan javelins were a widespread joke preseason, before they started kicking ass. The drivers played a big part in the success. Nobody was laughing after they started winning. Fact was the chassis needed a lot of help that the scca would not allow but kaplan and amc kept moving forward, rapidly developing the cars between competition. Kaplan did not get the credit he deserved. The first few engines were traco built, but were quickly replaced with kaplan engines, which made better power and survived longer. Working with amc engine people, they cast 390 blocks with smaller bores and four bolt mains and modified deck heights. Constantly improving the powerplant. John martin, the mechanic, even tells of modifying ford version t-10 close ratio gearsets to fit the amc t-10 case. Amc was not playing around. I saw revson’s 68 javelin in person. It had a full floater amc model 20 rear axle, modified with bolt on, cambered spindle ends and barrell splined axles so the rear tires had a degree of camber. They cheated everything they could get away with. No stone was left unturned in search of fractional performance gains!

Kelvinator Avanti Scooters. Who woulda thunk it... Many companies produced scooters. These were in production since the starting of 20th century. However scooters died a slow death by the beginning of 21st century due to increased competition and low demands.Following are the list of companies that produced scooters(just to name a few):-Vespa,Innocenti(its iconic Lambretta),Bajaj,Lohia Machines Limited(LML),Enfield fantabolous,Servetta(similar to lambretta but produced in Spain),Scooter India Limited(SIL),Automobile Products of India(API),Allwyn, Kelvinator,GNAL,Maharashtra Scooters Limited etc. Vespa and Innocenti were Italian companies.Vespa produces gearless scooters nowadays. On the other hand Innocenti shut shop in 1972 and SIL took over it.SIL was headquartered in Lucknow,Uttar Pradesh,India. It used to produce the lambretta scooter till the late 90’s.On the other hand API,Allwyn, Kelvinator produced scooters which almost identical physical appearance and technical specifications to that of lambretta but it came under different names like: Allwyn Pushpak, Avanti Kelvinator,API lamby150 etc. However these lambretta derivatives lacked the mechanical reliability and product quality as compared to Innocenti ones.Even Bajaj,Vespa and LML were far way better than these.Bajaj was selling vespa scooters like Vespa 150 etc till late 70’s.Some of Vespas sold in that period in India can be found bearing Bajaj speedometers! However this collabration ended in 1977 and Bajaj went on to produce scooters under the names like Bajaj 150(it’s first scooter),Bajaj Chetak,Bajaj Super,Bajaj Priya,Bajaj Cub,Bajaj Classic,Bajaj Super FE,Bajaj Legend. The early 80’s Chetak’s,Super’s and Priya’s had almost identical components to it’s vespa counterpart i.e. Vespa 150. However the scooter lost it’s share in market with ever increasing sales of motorcycles. It’s also interesting to note as a kid I would spot many of these as late as 2003 some of them even with sidecars!Nowadays even spotting a Bajaj Chetak or Super is rare especially in big cities in western India(Though there are many of these on road in North India and LML select and NV is very popular in Assam and Meghalaya).Spotting a Vespa or a lambretta is even rarer, the last time I had seen a Vespa as well as Lambretta was at a Exhibition in South Mumbai. duckduckgo.com/?q=History+of+Kelvinator+Avanti+Scooter&t=ffab&iax=images&ia=imageselectricvehicleweb.in/category/electric-bikes/garelli/
